My son and I gamble at the Borgata about twice a month. We usually stay at the Borgata. The Borgata was full so we got comped at the Water Club instead. As a previous poster states, "the Water Club has too many rules". Most of these rules are designed to gouge you for more money. For example, the first time in my life that I was not allowed to take a small cooler to my room. It had 4 bottles of water and 5 beers in it. I was stopped by a security guard and assistant manager at the elevator. They said no coolers allowed in the room. They also lied and said the Borgata has the same rule. WE have stayed at the Borgata at least 10 times; and never got our cooler confiscated. When we checked out the next day, we counted 8 different people with coolers coming out of the Borgata.I had to check the cooler at the desk. When I got to the room I realized why they do this. They want to gouge you with the wet bar. Don't touch any food or beverages in the room. You will be charged after 30 seconds; if you don't put the item back where you got it. If I had to pay for the room, I'd really be mad. We're going to try Caesar's next time Borgata is full. I don't want this review to reflect badly on the Borgata, just the Water Club.

A Highlands man drowned Sunday afternoon in Spring Lake after getting caught in strong rip currents and large waves, authorities said today.

Luke Walsh, 38, was pronounced dead at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was rushed after his body was pulled from the surf on the Washington Avenue beach, said Spring Lake Police Chief Robert Dawson Jr.

This was the second drowning in Spring Lake in two weeks.

Beautiful weather brought tourists to the Jersey Shore on Sunday, but many beaches, including Spring Lake, had no lifeguards on duty post-Labor Day.

"For a post-Labor Day, they were fairly crowded,'' Dawson said of Spring Lake beaches. ?There was a decent crowd on hand.''

Dawson said lifeguards were working at the township's two freshwater pools, in pavilions at the north and south ends of town.

Police received calls about a swimmer in distress at the Newark Avenue beach around 3:55 p.m., Dawson said.

Skeleton lifeguard crews from neighboring Sea Girt and Belmar responded, as did volunteers from Sea Girt, Spring Lake and Manasquan responding to the after-hours pager system, Dawson said.

With the assistance of surfers in the area, lifeguards pulled Walsh's body to shore on the Newark Avenue beach, one jetty south of where he was reported to be in distress.

Dawson said reports of a second swimmer in distress launched a search by lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard, but the search was called off after four hours when the water became too treacherous and police had indications that no one else was missing.

About 50 lifeguards formed a search line stretching into the ocean and the Coast Guard had two boats and a helicopter for four hours before the search was called off around 9:45 p.m., Dawson said.

He said there were no missing persons reports, no unattended beach articles and no unattended vehicles to indicate a second swimmer drowned.

Dawson said Walsh went to the beach by himself.

Rip currents from the remnants of Hurricane Hanna were still causing trouble at the Jersey Shore and the storm whipped up waves as high as 10 feet on Sunday.

On Aug. 24, Scott Kirton, 37, of Jersey City, drowned in rough surf off Spring Lake's Atlantic Avenue beach while lifeguards were on duty.

Police have identified the man who drowned on Sunday as Luke Walsh, 38, of
Keyport.

The action came as the U.S. Coast Guard said it was suspending its search for a possible second swimmer who had been reported in distress in the same waters.

Police Chief Robert Dawson Jr. said investigators now believe there was not a second swimmer in distress.

"We were able to determine that Mr. Walsh had gone into the water alone,'' Dawson said. "We also checked the area around the beach and there were no cars there, no beach chairs, no indication that there was anyone else who had gone into the water and not returned.''

In addition, police said they had not received an missing person report that would indicate a swimmer had gone out and not returned.

Based on that, Dawson said police and beach patrol personnel suspended their search Sunday evening.

"Based on the information we had and the roughness of the surf we couldn't justify sending our personnel into the water,'' Dawson said. "The Coast Guard stayed on station for about four hours extra.''

The Coast Guard continued to search after sunrise on Monday, but has since called off their search, said Petty Officer Crystalynn Kneen.

Walsh died Sunday afternoon after attempts at resuscitation failed, police and the Coast Guard said.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and members of the Spring Lake Police Department and Beach Patrol were involved in Sunday's search for the reported second swimmer, officials said.

A swimmer pulled from the waters off the borough beach late Sunday afternoon has been pronounced dead, and authorities are continuing to search for a second possible victim, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Crystalynn Kneen said.

The Coast Guard received a call at 5:06 p.m. reporting two 40-year-old swimmers were caught in a rip tide. One swimmer, a male who has not been identified, was recovered unconscious by locals, given CPR and transferred to emergency medical personnel for treatment.

The search continues today for a possible second swimmer, Kneen said.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and members of the Spring Lake Police Department and Beach Patrol conducted the search Sunday.

In the days following Tropical Storm Hanna's landfall, the waters have been extremely dangerous, and boaters, surfers and swimmers were warned to use extreme caution. Even without the strong winds associated with the storm, maritime conditions may remain dangerous, the Coast Guard said. Strong rip tides may still be present along beaches, and the potential exists for minor flooding in bays, sounds and inland waterways.

U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities were searching today for a missing swimmer near Spring Lake Beach in Monmouth County.

The Coast Guard received a call about 5:05 p.m. reporting two 40-year-old swimmers were caught in a rip tide. One swimmer was recovered by locals unconscious and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation and transferred to emergency medical personnel for treatment.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, and members of the Spring Lake Police Department and Beach Patrol were searching for the second swimmer, identified only as a man.

The Coast Guard issued a reminder for boaters, surfers and swimmers to exercise extreme caution returning to the water in the days following Tropical Storm Hanna's landfall.

A New Jersey screwball who is a dead ringer for Joba Chamberlain impersonated the Yankees pitcher in order to improve his stats with the ladies while scoring free food and drinks along the way, police said yesterday.

Ryan Ward, 29, of Asbury Park, was taken out of the game on Aug. 13, his two-week run of free drinks, Jersey-girl phone numbers, and autographs allegedly cut short by a failed attempt to snag free bagels.

Ward was charged with impersonation and theft of services, Belmar police officials said.

The phony Yankee made the rounds of Belmar and other Jersey shore towns for two weeks, racking up dozens of free drinks and Jersey girl phone numbers, residents and business owners said.

"He came in and said, 'Do you know who I am?'" Don Weston, manager of Belmar Bagel Café said. "We had three girls working and one of them gave him her number. We also had him sign a bunch of things."

Ward even managed to fool a Spring Lakes Heights police officer, another cop told The Post.

"He had him totally fooled into buying him drinks," the officer said. "We have all been having a pretty good laugh about it here."

Ward went into a Belmar real estate office and told a broker he was Chamberlain and wanted to buy a house for his father. For some reason, he also told the broker he had just won the lottery.

At Sports Nut Cards and Collectibles, Ward told manager Don Jones the truth.

"By the time he came here, the word was out he was a phony," Jones said. "He admitted it. He said he was doing it to get girls and he was successful with it."

Ward signed his best Chamberlain autograph, which based on real collectibles at the store looked nothing like the real thing.

Chamberlain has reportedly said he had been told about his imposter, and was glad more serious crimes had not been committed in his name.

A state educational board has ordered the Freehold Regional superintendent and a current and a former administrator to stop using doctoral titles obtained from an apparent diploma mill.

If they do not, the administrators will face stiff fines, the state Commission on Higher Education said in letters sent late last month to Superintendent H. James Wasser, Assistant Superintendent Donna Evangelista, and retired Assistant Superintendent Frank J. Tanzini.

"Please advise me . . . that you have ceased appending the Ed.D. or Dr. designation to your name, which is legally impermissible in New Jersey because Breyer State University does not meet the statutory definition of a duly authorized institution," Director Jane Oates wrote in the letters, dated Aug. 21.

Oates gave them a month to comply with the order.

The Asbury Park Press first wrote about the administrators gaining the degrees from Breyer State in July.
